If automatic distance-based imposters have issues, I'd still prefer a mode where everyone except those I force show is an imposter.

This could be easily solved by expanding the "Block poorly optimized avatars" combo box to have all optimization levels, so you could potentially block everything.

You can manually change the maximum avatar uncompressed size to 5MB. It is not the exact solution you want, but most avatars will not show.
