Problems with Mip Map Streaming
1 256 textures from 1998 (HL1) are getting squashed to 32
2 Every time Mips switch it stutters
3 Unity doesn't unload Mips nicely so you can have multiple res loaded at once for extended periods eating up VRAM (Fixed in URP)
4 Oculus menu has trouble rendering due to lack of VRAM (Pico too)
5 there is no Prioritization of Mips it's blanket so it doesn't prioritize people next to me and myself so I look pasty
6 I get Memory Low more often than before
Fix
Disabled Mips Map Streaming until it can be Prioritized or Disabled

Still Hitching on Mip Swap after the Update
Aaaaaaaa
PianoartistGYT
They just updated the mipmap and I can confirm that avatars still appear compressed when they used to not mipmap streaming should not be enforced and be a toggle we can switch on or off
PianoartistGYT
I’m on quest 3 so a lot of avatars were looking mostly fine but I can still see compression on my avatars and that makes me wonder how much worse it is for quest 2
Camera-Guy
PianoartistGYT it's pretty much the same

Compression with avatars and worlds problem
FinLeeWolf
I have been playing VR now for a little over a year and very recently with the new update I am experiencing issues,
I jumped into VR chat two days ago and everything was fine, but today I have jumped into VR chat and I am experiencing some really annoying things, everything seems to be running pretty slow I'm experiencing frame drops, and my avatars I've had saved for a long time now are now looking less detailed and just lower textures, along with worlds I have been to very recently we're running absolutely fine are now on playable, plus all my settings on my profile were all reset and it's really annoying having to change everything back to the way it was, but the biggest issue is the compression problem, now I am not an expert in this kind of stuff so please bear with me.
First off I should explain that I am only using the meta quest 2 standalone, in my settings when I last checked my compression was 500 megabytes and now I've noticed that it's been reduced to 40 megabytes which is making everything look terrible and unplayable, this is so unfair.

1.2 GB of RAM free and this happens
(I have the OVR Metric tool)
The Visor looks alright because Compression is disabled on it

Camera-Guy It's probably something these models in particular aren't doing that means the Unity mip streaming feature can't figure out how far away they are - it uses this to determine the largest mip to load. Do you have a link to this avatar?
(this also happened with particles)

They just need to reverse the update they did with the textures

I completely agree especially as an avatar creator I’ve made avatars that I spent a while on to get working on quest and then mipmap streaming just straight up ruins the avatar I put time and effort into plus I rarely even crashed in the previous update even my friend who is on quest 2 barely crashed and when he did it would be because his wifi got unplugged not because of vrchat

It would be better if it had setting similar to avatar culling with the ability to fully turn it off
PianoartistGYT
This is due to vrchats new mipmap streaming they say it’s to help reduce crashes and being sent back to your home world but instead it causes random lag spikes and making a lot of avatars look like trash plus as an added bonus they made it to where it is enforced on quest and cannot be disabled but the thing is that quest barely crashed anymore and only crashed if it was internet issues
So the lower quality is technically not a bug even though it’s very annoying and personally I think shouldn’t be forced on by default on quest and should be either removed or let us toggle it off so we get that quality back
