I personally find it confusing and scary for just some random name to pop up adding you but then you have no idea who they are and they aren't even in your session
So I would like to request for a feature where people can decide to add a short comment to send with their friend request so as to help people to understand who they are or why they added them
But of course also allow us to have a button to report said comments as people. Might troll with it or use it to harass people

If I find a public avatar that I really like, I often want to contact the author to offer to purchase the project for a good fee. The only way I can do this is by sending them a friend request, but they have no idea who I am. I'd like to be able to add a comment asking them if they might sell the project.

Just went to see if this was already posted. This feature really would of helped today since I was sending a req via the website.

This would be very, very helpful.
It would definitely help adding context as to why they are friending you, and it would help you filter random people out, in case you have a list full of pending friend requests.

Not sure how useful custom comments on friend requests would be, but a small subtext on a request with "added from same instance" or "added from social menu" would solve this issue, probably along with a discord-esque "mutual friends" feature.
