Find an Age Verification Provider Not Linked to Palantir
Flufflestuff
Persona is in fact, linked to Palantir.
This is the same controversy discord is having currently with it's verification.
Persona is currently in several disputes regarding maintaining user data longer than it's privacy clause dictates due to said involvement with palantir.
Palantir is pushing for a surveillance state that puts minority groups at risk.
Palantir Is not something VRC should want to be associated with.

Europe is testing a privacy friendly protocol for age verification. This should be integrated as soon as it's ready as it's not handled by a private company and does not require to provide a full id to private platforms. https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/en/policies/eu-age-verification

I absolutely do not mind the presence of age verification that is entirely voluntary, especially for the matter of spaces with 18+ labels, but Persona is the worst provider OF such services, thanks to being tied to Palantir and Peter Thiel, who has an active goal in creating a database of US Citizens to surveil, a DEEP violation of privacy, and rights.
I will refuse to purchase VRC+, and refuse to give my ID to verify my age UNTIL they switch to a provider that DOES NOT keep any photos in any database that will inevitably get leaked, like with what happened in the UK with 70k IDs over Discord's Age Verification.

I would rather this were not a thing, but if VRChat is going to do it, Persona is pretty much the worst choice. What you want is a provider that has been independently audited to simply not store the data after the age check is complete, preferably one in a GDPR region. Not a promise to delete after x number of days - that's simply NOT good enough. Privacy by design means not storing the data at all after the age check is complete, and it means not sharing data with third parties as part of the check - there is at least one alternative provider for whom the third party is Persona.

I was thinking about getting VRC+, but knowing that VRC gives identifying information to Palantir, and by extension Peter Thiel, has dissuaded me. It's disgusting. Thank you for informing me. I won't be purchasing it.

CrystalineGeode Do you have a source confirming that VRChat shares identifying information with Palantir or Peter Thiel?

I trusted VRC to pick a good partner. It's disappointing that I trusted them to keep us safe as users. I don't even mind the whole giving my ID thing over, because I'm doing business surrounding the platform, but if they're not doing what they say they will with the info, that's on VRC to cut ties. At this point, the companies that can oppose what is going on, should. Because compliance isn't worth losing an entire user base over.

While I enjoy that i have a badge on my profile that says I can participate in 'certain activities', I can no longer recommend anyone else do so until y'all find a verification platform that isn't linked to palantir etc

I'm cancelling my VRC+ as well. I'm sick of this, PLEASE stop bloody doing all of this! Parenting is the responsibility of the PARENTS, not companies. I'm sick and tired of this crap of everyone insisting on invading what little privacy we have, selling our data to whoever they want, and constantly trying to force us into a surveillance state.

I just cancelled my VRC+ subscription and just told all my friends to do the same. I refuse to use facial recognition for age verification checks. Especially when the companies doing them are run by facists.

I can no longer suggest that my friends use age verification on VRC now that I know the relationship ties to peter theil and the fascist trump administration. Like others are saying this is a direct threat to the safety of minority groups, as well as non marginalized people.
You need to utilize something else that is more trustworthy.

Churii~ I want to ask you a question, what is age verification for? I’m curious since I don’t see it balanced by a benefit and privacy/anonymity.
My thought is like: ‘Why VRChat if you don’t need anonymity?’
Persona looks horrible anyway, it’s either they make a switch or remove it.

Persona is Palantir, and Palantir is scummy. I am cancelling VRChat+ until this matter is resolved.
WubTheCaptain
Vyruem Do you have a factual, verifiable source for "Persona is Palantir"?

While Peter Thiel's Founders Fund is listed as a "minority" investor for Persona, that only means their contribution was less than 50%, not necessarily less than or equal to other investors. Founders Fund also "led" the Series C round and co-led the Series D round of funding. This usually indicates the most invested, but more importantly, the "lead investor" is largely responsible for coordination of the rest of the funding round and is more involved with the process; consequently, these investors often have or will request more influence. For example, Napoleon Ta, Partner at Founders Fund, was lead on both the Series C and D (for Founders Fund) funding rounds and now sits on the board at Persona.
