I hope it's not too late for me to put in my two cents here about this.
Inventory is something that's always been specific for every game and platform. Inventories per world, as discussed in another post, could end up being extremely specific. It would make sense for the layout of the inventory itself to be customizeable within each world as well.
Additionally, we really need to be able to limit what people can have in their inventories. We limit the poly count for avatars, but inventory items can be just as intense if not more than an avatar can. I recommend that items in inventories that are uploaded by users be submitted to a public rating system, much like the trusted system already is. This added with moderation to filter out plain BAD items, could seriously help the community from the bad apples who would want to disrupt normal game play.
On the other hand, we have private items as well. For the most part, they should undergo the same filters and rules as above. I'm not sure how to cross that bridge, so perhaps some ideas there would help.
I think this is a process that requires a lot of forethought. I imagine items at some point will attain an amount of abilities, materials, parts, attributes, etc. This, because perhaps one item, such as a 'hammer' in one world could be see as the same item in a different world, say 'Thor's Hammer'. A normal hammer wouldn't have the same attributes that Thor's Hammer does, but a much more powerful hammer could. This gives way to the need of an attribute system and linking of items from one world to the next.

A really good idea for this would be similar to avatars. I don't see a problem with allowing hundreds of these as some people (like me) have hundreds of avatars which have these objects as built in props. If we can have some trigger options for them like click to do an animation it would be great so we could make guns, swords, camera objects, stereos, etc. Make it so only one is equippable at a time but you can upload as many of these as you like and they can be selected from a list. Optionally have it so you can hand it to someone else and you can pull out a new object. The other person cannot until they drop the item you gave them resulting in it returning to your inventory. They can continue holding it after you leave but if they drop it, it is gone. Just my personal idea of how this should work.

Adding my 2 cents to an old thread...
= Natural Object Spawning from Avatars
A new special Component that can be attached to avatar, which spawns an item on collision (configurable), would be very nice (imagine drawing some magic items / swords out from clothes) and easier to use than menu UI based spawning.
= Multiple Item Developer Tiers
Almost anyone should be able to upload items with very restricted component whitelist (similar or more restricted than avatar). We can also imagine each user's items instance containing server-generated digital watermark (in textures & 3D meshes) to prevent illegal copying. (this is particularly important for monetizing)
Opening up C# scripting to engaged 3rd party (corporate) developers can open up lots of opportunities, similar to how mobile apps platform works. This probably requires manual inspection of submitted source code for a while & special contracts.

the maximum count could be defined in every users client settings, so that by default there are like 4 props per avatar possible and everyone can turn it up or down as they wish

Tayou: In the menu you can keep as many props as you like since the actual object is only loaded when you spawn it. I mean there should be a limit of objects a player can spawn and they should disapear/respawn when they are droped and the distance to the owner exceeds lets say 15 units or a given amount of time has passed. That way trolls have limited options from the beginning.

I suggest that props can use the avatar poly limit, so if your avatar + props is beyond 20k polys it wont allow it.

When I first heard about this game I was under the assumption that it had something like this. I could've sworn I saw an image of someone with an inventory system with umbrellas and guns and stuff that they were ready to grab and spawn in game for a time until they let go of it. Would be mega useful to have something like that instead of an animation override where it would only happen for a short amount of time.

We're calling this "Avatar Props" and there's a design in the works considering many of the things discussed here in the post. There's lots to balance and work out but I would very much like to see props and inventory in VRChat. The other thing to consider with this and other aspects of VRChat is creators being able to earn from their work down the line.

Ron: I know it's been over a year, but I'm really really looking forward to this. In my opinion, custom props and inventories are going to be one of the most fundamental parts of VRChat.

A total YES. BUT only one or two objects at the same time (more in the inventory).
The total poly count of all spawned objects, including the avatar itself, may not exceed 20000 polygons and 5x5x5 units. Objects have to be loaded on the fly.
Most important the spawned object has to disappear at a certain distance to it's creator (10-15 units).
I have stuff like lamps and weapons in mind or something like a camera when I think about an inventory. Or simply the pictures of the camera.
I hope the above takes some of the worms out of the can.
Oh and it would be cool if we could flag some stuff to be shareable and other things private.

Perhaps with a count, size, and detail limit. Maybe only able to spawn one item at a time.
