Make pens a universal feature

Writing in VR is pretty great. You can whip up a diagram, communicate as a mute, or just draw your friends. It's so useful that people put pens in all kinds of random worlds and avatars... But wait, why should they need to do that? What if... we could just have pens _everywhere_?
Please add a way to summon a synced pen that is not bound to a specific world or avatar. Some thought will need to be put into controlling abuse - eg pen muting options, and ways to disable it on specific worlds where it would detract from the experience (eg some horror worlds maybe?)

VRC+ item. Pen. There you go, i gave you something else for VRC+.

My only concern with this is that many malicious users will use this feature to draw and write some pretty vulgar things. If implemented, I would like to request a way to know who drew or wrote something with their pen in group instances. This way instance moderators have a way to take appropriate action.

Well at least If they don't give us one we'll get one as soon as we get the props SDK haha

6 years after, this post still is relevant.

The ability to save pen drawing info that accumulates in a world over the course of a session (far too large for world persistence) would make VR Chat the best 3D Markup Tool for things like (IRL) Architectural Visualization. Much more developed and refined than literally any other product that has ever been marketed at us for this purpose simply because VRChat already has the “VR” part figured out and substantially developed far beyond the gimmick phase that other VR markup tools are stuck in. Making Pens into a system feature instead of a third party prefab is the only way to make this a possibility since this would require sending data out of the World. It makes sense that VRChat might host that 3D pen info on a cloud and monetize access to the “Pen Data Persistence Service” similar to other things that are familiar to AEC industry such as Matterport, so that users can access and import the session pen data into BIM/Architecture software like Revit or as 3D elements into AutoCAD or other things. From experience, I can tell you that a hypothetical plugin for getting cloud-hosted VRC Pen Data into Autodesk Revit would be easy enough that the Revit/Dynamo/BIM community would likely just make a Revit plugin for it, provided that the World Session VRC Pen data from a cloud source were to be a real thing. But the option to save Session Pen Data like this for any use case (not just Architecture) could represent an entire new revenue-source for VRChat.

This is definitely worth revisiting now that Items are a thing

2 years and still only on tracked? Make it a VRC+ feature if you must, but I would love to see this

I'm an artist, IMO pens have needed to be a system-level feature for ages now. Relying on world or avatar authors to add pens isn't enough: some worlds have only one or two pens total (a pain if more than one person wants to draw), some pens have very limited stroke resolution/stroke counts ("oh, the earlier strokes from this drawing are gone"), and most of them don't reliably sync for people who join late.
That's to say nothing of the times I join a meetup in a world without pens at all -- it removes one of my main verbs, the thing I do while socializing (in and out of VR), and that makes it hard to justify visiting most worlds for more than a few minutes. Incorporating just a basic single-color world-writing pen as a standardized feature has the potential to solve all these issues.
(Bonuses attached to this, like flashy pen effects and persistent online storage for drawings, can also be nice value-adds for VRChat+, just saying.)

Holy cows.
Old 2019 post, but it's not adjusted to 2024 standards. Many reactions.
You can easy add pens to worlds.
You can easy add pens to your avatar.
What is the problem here? People are too lazy. Creators are too lazy to look around. Things that can easy done are just ignored and more people want add pen to the menu (like chat feature).
I still don't get it. I make worlds and add pens there. No problem. Do i need pen on my avatar? No problem.
Must VRChat developers solve everything for you while pen assets are free to download?
If VRChat developers start to add pens, then they must also add security toggle to block pens. Not all people want see drawings. Some people are drawing too much, and that will cause more fps drops and get laggy too. It's not good solution to be far.
And there are also pens with limited trail length. But you cannot draw something with it. It will vanish already at begin. Not useful at all.
Keep it in mind, this will kill also pen creators on booth. Because if it's added to VRChat menu, then nobody will bother to download assets. This is more bad side for all pen creators who put a lot effort in working pen assets. You're killing their work. Some exists already for YEARS and that is some disrespect for their long work.
It's not a big problem in many worlds. It's more your problem because you're lazy. And many world creators know already how to add pens, except NEW world creators are ignoring things. They must LEARN how add pens.
More likely pens should in every world building tutorial to explain how to add it.
So yeah, it's very easy to add pens to worlds or avatars. But again, some people are way too lazy or dumb... that is why some people are arguing already about simple things. Sigh, this is really sad.
What is the solution? Stop being lazy.

> You can easy add pens to worlds.
Not universal.
>You can easy add pens to your avatar.
Eats performance ranking, not syncing.
>then they must also add security toggle to block pens
Yes, that's the point makes sense.
> then nobody will bother to download assets
Not obvious and requires explanation. Community-made alternatives often very useful for specific situations.

A similar post was made about account-linked props
If a pen could be uploaded to a users account (say a free asset from gumroad for you to download and upload to your account) then you could summon the pen on every avatar you have and be able to use it (locally or globally, a player can allow the pen to be picked up by other users in the world as well)
Please support this wonderful post!
