specify "malicious use" in the community guidelines for nameplate modification
laundmo
recently the guidelines were changed to include this statement: "Avatars must not hide, obstruct, add/remove elements from, or affect/modify the appearance of the VRChat UI (such as nameplates)."
as nameplate backgrounds, for example. are not harming anyone in any way. this is why i would like to ask for an amendment to that rule, specifying that any malicious use is forbidden.

out of so many needed requests out there, these guys apparently got nothing to do but to find ways right off the bat to "fix" the unreasonable.

Modifying nameplates can be taken quite far.. it can be used to obfuscate a nameplate to make figuring out who is abusing the system in world much harder...

The interpretation of this has been a point of contention since the first nametag-hiding shader was uploaded to go invisible. I know a lot of "spook" avatars use this to sneak around, etc.
The TOS explicitly bans:
"Impersonating a VRChat employee."
"You may not falsely identify yourself as another individual or group."
So my understanding up until now has been that you can't change your nameplate to pretend to be someone else, impersonate a mod, or change the UI in a way that deceives people (ie: Giving yourself a "Trusted User" border when you're not, adding a "Friend" icon to your nametag, changing your performance ranking icon, etc.)
It would be great to have the TOS reflect what is actually banned since the current wording is very vague.
For example, "affect/modify the appearance of the VRChat UI" would apply to full-screen shaders, distortion effects on water shaders, post-processing in worlds, or even a stray particle flying in front of/behind the nameplate.
Something like a guideline on what would consider acceptable vs unacceptable would be nice.

Eremite: they updated that to remove the vanity nametags that were getting very popular in the past days, a free prefab u can download and add a "fake nametag bg"... i still see no problems about that but the devs didn't like it

Annoying that features people like get banned seemingly only because they didn't think of it, especially when only your friends can see it.

Eremite: It's confusing that they are cracking down on vanity nameplates but not cracking down on cancerous screenspace.
NayuVRC
Chdata: cause cancerous screens paces depends on the user not the shader itself and to punish the user there is the safety settings
Chdata
NayuVRC: Does covering a nameplate with vanity not also count as a problem depending on the user?
Safety settings will turn both of these things into gigantic spheres or rectangles that get in the way anyway.

NayuVRC: vanity nametags are something harmless and fun whereas cancer screenspace avatars still roam freely
