It is something that you can chat beyond instances to friends. Because people wearing HMD have difficulty in seeing other chat software such as Discord, so there is no means of contact unless they are in the same instance.

I use the steam overlay to have discord, skype, steam messages etc. However the small little bar on the bottom covering what you're typing is a real issue. But thats out of VRchats reach I believe.
