Text Chat/Quick Text Replies
complete
Casuallynoted
In the event a user is unable to respond by voice, or would rather not respond by voice (say they're set to mute everyone), this would allow them to respond to others via either quick phrases, or an intuitive text chat menu. Figured I'd pop this popular request over from the Slack.

Woah, I get to close a request from before I played VRChat.
Anyways, we have a text chatbox now that you can use. Open your Action Menu, go to Options, then go to Chatbox. (Easier access pending)
You can send chat messages, and people can see the messages appear over your head. The visibility of these messages is meant to emulate voice reach (so if you can't hear someone, you can't see the messages either)
The messages are not logged and are ephemeral. Once they're gone, they're gone.
We're still improving this system, but let's go ahead and close this.

Text Chat for disabled/uncomfortable Players?
J
Jovict
Would it be possible to add a text chat feature? For disabled people, people who are uncomfortable with their voice, or with talking, or are shy.
You could make it something optional so it won't bother players that don't want it, like a button to hide it and to show it, something simple.
Not having a text chat really makes it harder to socialize to a lot of people, it becoming a feature would help out a lot.
Maybe with TTS as a additional feature you can enable for specific players you'd want to listen to their messages.

My Friend is Mute; In-Game Texting Please!
PrivateQuiet
I know that 10s or maybe 100s have already asked for this before. I have a friend that is stuck in AltspaceVR only because they provide texting. Although we really don't like it there, we find ourselves forced to go back just because of in-game texting. Please, give us the ability to use in-game text messaging to chat in VRChat.

This NEEDS to become a thing. It's what's keeping the game from becoming widespread!

How is this not a feature yet? I get the immersion argument, but the reality is that most people aren't using VR headsets in VRC. Even those who have VR headsets will use it without them because sometimes they want to socialize in VRC without having to dedicate themselves 100% to being in VR.
Having to remove a headset to do anything outside of VR can be annoying, especially if you want to multitask a little. And having to get on your mic, or put on a regular headset, just to casually connect to VRC is silly when basic text chat support would be more convenient. That VRC seems to have issues swapping audio sources while it's running, meaning I have to restart it just to swap between speakers and headset, isn't helping.
That's before getting into the fact that not everyone wants to use voice. It's a comfort issue, and forcing anyone who wants to socialize at all to do it in a way they're uncomfortable with is a bit weird. Sure there are tools for writing in the air, but unless they have and are using a VR headset they won't have the hand tracking to make that effective. Writing in the air with the mouse is a pretty sloppy option (and seems only marginally more immersive than text chat, as far as communicating goes).
While I have many issues with VRC, this one discourages me from using it the most because I can't simply log on and chat, I have to either be mute (and maybe message through Discord or Steam) or I have to suit up.
Immersion is great, but so is flexibility. If a user wants to block all text chat, make that an option. They'll be ignoring everyone who tries to communicate that way, arguably to everyone's detriment, which is effectively what's being forced on everyone now for no good reason. At least this would make it an option.

OrochiTabris: agreed. i dont understand why they wont add ANY SORT of text chat option. even for just friends or something..........the ONE major thing that keeps vrchat from being what it could be for me.

Yeah I would love this just started playing vr chat a few days ago and already have 8 hours I refuse to use the TTS programs that are recommended as they are mostly annoying and bothers others and im a physical mute so its impossible for voice
