Currently, Cantonese is named as “廣東話(Gwong2 dung1 waa2)”. It is the everyday term people use in specific regions. However, it often misleads people into assuming that “廣東話” refers to people from Guangdong Province in China.
By changing the name to “粵語(Jyut6 jyu5),” this misunderstanding can be greatly avoided. “粵語” is widely used among ethnic Chinese communities and within China. It is also the proper term used in official contexts, rather than “廣東話”.
