complete

i know oculus users don't have auto hold available. for the index i think it would be useful to have the open hand gesture drop items instead of releasing squeezing the controller.

I'm marking this as complete due to the fact that in 2019.2.3's latest build, you now have the choice (via SteamVR's Controller Bindings) to handle object grabbing via "Grip Release" or "Open Hand Release", which behaves a bit like you've described. Try both!

I agree with this, but I also think you should not have to grip the controllers at all in order to grab items. From people who've played games like Boneworks or Moondust with the Index controllers, they say it is a lot more immersive to grab using the mechanic of closing their hands around the controllers instead of gripping, as the rest position of your hand on the controllers are supposed to be open hand anyway.

Right now the gripping value seems like it's a little high. Holding something for a long period of time without accidentally dropping it would get pretty exhausting. :)

my thoughts go back to the moon dust demo game. You didnt have to squeeze to pick up items just had to close your hand. How it currently works with sqeezing to pick up is nice so you dont accidently pickup items when you close your hand. But for dark worlds where you have to constantly hold on to a flashlight. Peoples hands will gradually loosen over time and will accidently drop the item. So you could have squeezing to pickup but not dropping until you do open hand.
