Display nameplates when quick menu is opened
complete
Observer.
Because nameplates do have a performance impact, how about in addition to simply having them always on or off, we get a third option that hides them but then shows them when the quick menu is opened. Just like the trust rank and their icons.
This way we can disable them but still quickly see names at the press of a button.
For people who do not know, turning nameplates off can reduce micro stuttering in worlds with large amounts of people. It would be convenient to still have them off but be able to quickly check names of people around you.

[Optionally] display nameplates when quick menu is opened.

I wouldn't mind if this were just the default behavoir when you have nameplates hidden. always have them come back when the menu is open. no need for a third option.

hmm
maybe a system in which, when you hover over a player or have your head looking directly at another player, for vr users, a name is displayed above your character's arm so you can read it, and for desktop users, it's displayed at the bottom of the screen
Observer.
Dorrivix: While I understand what people want when they say they want the names to automatically display themselves in certain situations, this would involve more processing time to run these checks and in some cases could cause more performance issues. Thus, negating the performance gains of having the nameplates off in the first place.

Observer.: brain runs on overdrive sometimes, and when I've an idea at those times, it goes overboard with the idea.
Observer.
Dorrivix: Not a problem at all. I just wanted to explain why I settled on the quick menu to display the nameplate. All the ideas that have been mentioned regarding the nameplates would be great user options to customise how the nameplate works, and it is possible to eventually get them to perform well enough without sacrificing features. A nameplate is one of the the things that can be run solely on the cpu, gpu or even a mix of both to achieve the desired effect and performance.
Keep your ideas flowing and feel free to post a feature request of your own. In fact there is already a feature request similar to your idea regarding the nameplates, so you can go upvote it if you would like. Just search "nameplate" in feature requests to see all the features posted. (https://vrchat.canny.io/feature-requests?search=nameplate).

I'd like to have nameplates that aren't ten feet wide in my face for no reason.

Wouldn't that mean it would cause micro lag every time the quick menu is opened?
Observer.
(Not) Sam: In theory yes but remember we already have a toggle button in the quick menu which if you spam it should give you an idea of how much lag it would cause to do it automatically. In addition if they added the same asynchronous loading as the trust rank information its possible to reduce the stutter.
